In historic York, Ella seems to have the perfect life. She's a published author, her bookshop is thriving, she's married to the man of her dreams and they've started a family of their own. But Ella is struggling. Motherhood isn't quite everything she imagined it to be, and she's worried that there may be cracks in her marriage. On the other side of the Atlantic, despite endless blue skies and a stream of eager customers in her vintage dress shop, Ella's mother Fabia finds that life in San Diego is not enough for her. She misses York, and can sense that Ella needs her, so she flies home. And this is when they meet Bryony. With a complicated life and secrets of her own, Bryony may have some of the answers they're looking for. Can Ella and Fabia help her find her way, whilst also working out how to find their own happily ever after?… (mehr)

Reads like a more modern Chocolat. ( )

I haven't recorded the first book in this story but I have read it and this was a good follow-up.
Ella runs Happily Ever After, a small bookshop in York. It is a welcoming space and when Bryony enters she finds that she's found a good place to go, she's still dealing with having been hospitalised for her visions. Her sister is a user and she's drifted into a relationship that she's not sure about. She finds "Miss Mary's book of Dreams" a limited edition written by a historical witch from the area and finds some answers to her questions.

Meanwhile Ella is having issues since the birth of her child, which sounds a lot like post-partum depression, she's also having to deal with jealousy with a beautiful co-worker of her husband. The threads of her life are coming together when the women of her family come to visit.

It's not bad and interesting but sometimes it felt like there should be more. ( )

Miss Mary's Book of Dreams by Sophie Nicholls is the story of three generations of women – Maadar Bozorg, Fabia, and Ella - and of two sisters Selena and Bryony who enter their lives. Strong women. A bookshop. A really special book. A little big of magic. A beautiful combination for a sweet, engaging story. Definitely one for the "feel good" pile of stories. Note that this book is a sequel to Sophie Nicholl's book The Dress, but it can stand alone as a story.

I enjoyed reading more about the characters from "The Dress" but I had a hard time connecting all the dots in the story - there didn't feel like there was much of a story and I never really figured out what Byrony had to do with Ella other than maybe being a catalyst? I liked the idea of magic and how it connects with our inner selves but there needed to be more of a story. I did enjoy the introduction of Maadar as a character. ( )
