Having read Jillian's Other works, I knew I was in for something different with this book. I read the blurb, and I was hooked. I've been in situations similar to the blurb, and I felt I was already connecting with Ember the moment I knew about her life.
Ember has been dealt a hard blow in life, well, several actually. She is trying to cope with all of these issues, some of which are ongoing, and some - like her silbling's suicide - that have passed, but are still a huge part of her life. She feels lost, confused and is in quite a dark place. Then she starts to work closely with her counselor. She starts to make headway, and then a strong, domineering man enters her life.
We read along as he takes control, leading Ember to a life she hadn't expected, but at least she has a focus. Is it a good focus though?
I loved this book! I haven't read books by many authors who can tackle two very different genres and do so so perfectly. Yes, this book was dark, but at the same time there was a sweet note coming to the surface. I found myself fighting for this sweet love to become real, something where Ember could have a life and someone she could trust.
From the first page, I felt as though I was a part of this book. I loved and hated, I felt anger, sorrow and joy. I even felt lost, as much as Ember, then started to smile as the things panned out.
The pace of this book is neither fast nor slow, but a blend of both. There are angry moments that are perfectly written, with a swift pace to feel fast and irate. I also loved the slower pace, when we felt a moment of happiness, contentment or love.
The detail is excellent! Each character had a great amount of detail, really brining them to life. I felt that I knew them and could even count them as part of my life. Jacobs also wrote their actions and decisions wonderfully- as each character really stuck to their own personality.
Overall, I loved every moment of this book. It had me hooked from the first page, and I truly could not put it down. I love Jacob's ability to weave a story that is both dark and redeeming. I highly highly recommend giving this book a read! ( )
