Then, after reading it, I remember that I don't really ever like self help books. This one wasn't horrible as far as the genre goes, and it was free on my Kindle, so it was pretty low risk. Doepker leads his readers through 21 brief chapters (designed to be read one per day) that will help you to add good habits to your routines. I liked his focus on "microhabits" -- really small good things that can lead to bigger good things if developed over time (like, for example: reading one page per day, or writing two sentences, or walking to the end of the driveway and back). The idea is that you do AT LEAST your microhabit every day, and then, if time and motivation allow, you can exceed your goal. If you keep up with this, you ingrain the habit of doing something related to your goal each day, and as time goes on, you can add to and increase your commitment to your habit. I picked the habit of holding a plank position for a minute a day, and I really did it almost every day while reading the book (but then stopped). Although my particular habit didn't stick, I think I picked up some good tips. The book went off the rails for me after the 21 chapters by Doepker when he included excerpts from other recommended books -- it seemed less like helpful info and more like a plug for his friends books. Still, this isn't a bad read if you are feeling self helpy and even the corny parts aren't as bad as they could be. Maybe someday I'll find the perfect self help book for me!
