A murderous android discovers itself in "All Systems Red", a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial intelligence. In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid -- a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.… (mehr)
Anonymer Nutzer: Fast paced, humorous space adventure with lots of fun twists without romance. Features a sarcastic main character who, like Murderbot, finds himself helping others while trying to understand and run from his own past (all while failing to convince himself he doesn't care).… (mehr)
Cloverlimes: Action & humor focused race across space where the main character is pitted against corporate interests. Interesting characters, including AI characters.
That was really fun! A SecUnit deactivating it's governor modue, calling itself Murderbot and then... not killing anybody! It is insecure, shy, makes a lot of mistakes, admits those mistakes (to itself at least) and that's what makes it fun.
But this book is sneaky. As much as you want to think this is just some lightweight little confection made of robot fights and space murder — and as much as All Systems Red wants to present itself as nothing but robot fights and space murder — Martha Wells did something really clever. She hid a delicate, nuanced and deeply, grumpily human story inside these pulp trappings, by making her murderous robot story primarily character-driven. And the character doing the driving?

I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module, but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites.

And in their corner all they had was Murderbot, who just wanted everyone to shut up and leave it alone so it could watch the entertainment feed all day.
