It's almost Christmas in the small English village of Finch--and everyone is sick. Though many of the villagers regretfully decline their invitations to Emma and Derek Harris's annual Christmas bash, Lori Shepherd has no intention of missing it. When the winter weather takes a turn for the worse, it's agreed that none of the guests will leave until morning. There's general merriment as the Christmas party becomes a pajama party--until a car appears in the winding driveway and promptly slides off the slick pavement and into a tree. Matilda "Tilly" Trout--a lost and scatterbrained, middle-aged woman--is mercifully unhurt and invited to stay the night. The next morning, Emma asks her guests if they would like a tour of the Manor--including a secret room she recently discovered. Several guests put forth guesses as to its purpose, but it's Tilly who correctly identifies the room as a chapel. Placing a palm on one of the ornately-carved panels, Tilly finds a hidden compartment concealing a pile of glittering treasure--including an exquisitely decorated heart made of solid gold. Where did it come from, and why does it look so different from everything else in the chapel? Why didn't Emma even know about this hidden compartment in her own home until now--and how did Tilly? With Aunt Dimity's otherworldly help, Tilly's bewildering store of knowledge, and the village's collective memory to guide her, Lori sets out to unravel the mystery behind the heart of gold. Lori and Tilly both discover they'll never spend another holiday alone--and Christmas finally comes to Finch!… (mehr)

Sweet installment in the Aunt Dimity series. This one struck me as a little on the short side and not as intense as some of the books and lacking a good mystery. Everything falls in place too easily. It struck me as an inflated novella designed for Christmas reading. But still sweet and fun to see familiar characters. ( )

It's Christmas time in Finch and only a handful of people are up and around to celebrate as most of the town is suffering from the Yuletide Blight. When Tilly Trout's car goes off the road in the driveway of Anscombe Manor due to an ice storm, she is welcomed and rescued by Emma Harris' Christmas party attendees, including Lori Shepherd. After Tilly is welcomed, all are invited to speculate on what the unidentified room in Anscombe Manor is. Turns out it's a clandestine Roman Catholic chapel with a priest hole in it. Inside the priest hole, however, is a Hindu altar with a gold heart inscribed with the letters CM. Lori and company decide that they are going to figure out whose initials were engraved on the gold heart and what their story really was. A delightful, heart-warming mystery. Ghostly Aunt Dimity of the blue journal lends a helping hand as well. ( )

Every time I read a new Aunt Dimity mystery, it’s like meeting old friends you haven’t seen in awhile: it’s absolutely delightful. In this one, a mishap on an icy road brings a stranger to a Christmas party in Lori’s village. Clearly distraught, Tillie is enveloped by loving arms and invited to stay at the manor, along with the other guests stranded by the ice storm. Though she downplays her intelligence, Tillie is a fount of information that leads the small group in finding a secret room and solving a mystery more than a hundred years in the making. This series just shows that you don’t need to have a murder victim to have an engaging and intricate mystery. Much of the enjoyment comes from the quaint setting and the interaction between and the on-going lives of the characters. The books are all well written and the series is highly recommended. ( )
