When he gets weird about mentioning names and starts dancing around revealing something I can find out myself with a little Googling, I get a little vexed. In this book, I think he might be doing it as a joke on himself for doing it in Vacationland, especially since he spills at the end which dang airline he’s been talking about in code the whole time. He’s weird, but he’s mostly my kind of weird, and this is an entertaining read no matter how much you know about him to begin with. And when the Medallion Status is far away from showbiz, discussing frequent flyer programs or his hometown in Maine, it is quite good, and appropriately interesting and sad. But it is impossible for me to care less about anything Hollywood, which radically reduced how much I was ever going to get out of this. Still, he's a good enough and funny enough writer that it is tough to complain too much, and the episodic nature of the stories works quite well in these COVID times, despite having been largely written before them. ___________________ [1] As I've gotten older, I have begun to dig melancholic memoirs; melancholy has become a bit of a default feeling for me, so anything that lets me know it is a semi-universal experience for men of my demographic, is, for whatever reason, pleasurable.
