Un lujoso hotel victoriano y una trama llena de intriga y humor llevada con mano maestra. Ésta es la obra que lanzó a la fama a Arnold Bennet. La novela nunca ha dejado de reeditarse en Inglaterra y fue la obra que más beneficio económico le reportó de toda su carrera; tuvo un éxito considerabilísimo por su perfecta maquinaria narrativa y su calibrada dosificación de efectos dramáticos. Esta obra es una pieza de entidad notable. Los ambientes, por ejemplo, por los que transitan los personajes de la emocionante intriga (desde el gigantesco hotel de lujo hasta el desolado y complejo ámbito portuario londinense; desde la bolsa y su mar de complejas transacciones hasta los palacios del juego y la diversión) están descritos con mano maestra, ofreciendo un fresco inigualable de la Inglaterra fin de siglo, no inferior a ciertas novelas de mayor entidad dramática. Asimismo, los diálogos poseen el humor, encanto e ingenio del mejor Bennett.

Romp of a thriller dashed off in serial form, such that each short chapter ends in suspense or revelation. Brisk, melodramatic adventures whirl us around 1890s London’s high society and some low: magnates, aristocrats, plotters and proteans. With the simple characterisations and contrived plotting of a Tintin comic, this lacks any interiority or depth, so a marked contrast to Bennet’s denser later work, but is an enjoyable read all the same. A hoot. The author was a young junior editor on a magazine that ran trashy serials. He said to himself, "The trashy serials I am getting are lousy, I could write a better one." So he did.

Dated, but still enjoyable, early thriller from Arnold Bennett. A headstrong New York millionaire, foiled in getting what he wants for dinner, on a whim buys a great London hotel, and finds that he gets far more than he bargained for, what with European intrigue. Very much of a piece with Oppenheim and the others of that ilk. A few amusing howlers by Bennett are in the book (he ascribes luxury in New York City to 8th Avenue, of all places, and describes West Orange as being in "New Jersey, New York"). A whole lot of caricatures, but really, that is very much the whole spirit of the thing. Just sit back with the popcorn. ( )

Sans intérêt. On m’annonce une pièce de théâtre par un des maîtres du non-sense anglo-saxon. Je n’ai vu ni humour anglais (même si la pièce se veut légère), ni non-sense (même si l’intrigue est tellement cousue de fil blanc qu’elle en devient ridicule). Il y a peut-être du second degré que je n’ai pas vu, de la dérision que je n’ai pas perçue, en tout cas il n’y a rien qui n’ait retenu mon attention. Cette comédie est passée sur moi sans laisser de trace, comme si elle n’existait pas.
