Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:

By the author of Rosemary's Baby, a horrifying journey into a future only Ira Levin could imagine

Considered one of the great dystopian novelsâ??alongside Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange and Aldous Huxley's A Brave New Worldâ??Ira Levin's frightening glimpse into the future continues to fascinate readers even forty years after publication.

The story is set in a seemingly perfect global society. Uniformity is the defining feature; there is only one language and all ethnic groups have been eugenically merged into one race called "The Family." The world is ruled by a central computer called UniComp that has been programmed to keep every single human on the surface of the earth in check. People are continually drugged by means of regular injections so that they will remain satisfied and cooperative. They are told where to live, when to eat, whom to marry, when to reproduce. Even the basic facts of nature are subject to the UniComp's willâ??men do not grow facial hair, women do not develop breasts, and it only rains at night.

With a vision as frightening as any in the history of the science fiction genre, This Perfect Day is one of Ira Levin's most haunting nov… (mehr)

A particularly well thought out world. It actually feels quite real rather than a collection of clichés. Very Levinesque in it’s exploration of horrible things being done to people without their consent. Also explores moral questions around personal accountability.

Basically, people in the past (our future) have programmed a computer to control the entire population through a combination of drugs, and genetic and social engineering. Basically condemning their own descendents to a half lived life and the end of which they are killed.

There’s a great twist at the end which luckily I’d managed to forgot in the thirty years since I last read it. Be careful what you read about it before starting. ( )

This Perfect Day by Ira Levin

DNF.

I am soo sorry to give an Ira Levin book a 2. I LOVE Levin . I feel tempted to change my rating.

SPOILERS:

It did not FEEL like a Levin book though. I was baffled reading this. And I should not say I did not finish this. I did. But with the help of alot of skimming.

The book was very dry. I could not get involved and I not only love Levin I love Dystopian..which makes me wonder If I missed something.

The rape scene turned me off as I am sure it did many. I was disturbed by the roles in society women played here.

But none of those reasons justify a 2 rating. All I c an say is I tried on many occasions to read this and the dryness of the writing and slowness of the pacing made my eyes get heavy. I know people who love this book. I just could not get nor stay involved.

I still recommend it because I looked at some reviews and this really seems one that has a great array of opinons. Plus I still love 90 percent of Levin's work. Just not this book ( )

Ira Levin was a prophet. I kinda knew where this book would stand from all the negative reviews. I find the idea that the book is non-feminist or non-inclusive hilarious. That's a remove that huge plank from your eyes kind of thing.

This is sort of a spoiler

I pictured the Programmers as the Walton Family and the folks on Majorca looking a lot like the people who go to Walmart. ( )

This novel by Ira Levin is about a utopian society where treatments help maintain a stable society, but at what cost? Protagonist Li (or Chip as he prefers to be known) is uncertain about the sameness, and eventually joins a counterculture trying to change things. Good characters, good plot twists, and a very good read. Highly recommended. ( )

A futuristic society run entirely by computer, and an individual's rebellion against it.

Vrij kleine druk.

A city's blank white concrete slabs, the giant ones ringed by the less giant, gave space in their midst to a broad pink-floored plaza, a playground in which some two hundred young children played and exercised under the care of a dozen supervisors in white coveralls.
