William Trevor's Last Stories is forthcoming from Viking. Three novels by "a master craftsman and a deep creative talent."--The Times (London)   In his first novel, The Old Boys, a group of septuagenarians revive schoolboy conflicts in the election of the President of the Association. Now, however, the men possess a fiercer understanding of the things in life that matter--power, revenge, hatred, love, and the failure of love--and intrigue and deceit result.   In The Boarding House, William Wagner Bird takes in boarders whom society would never miss--if it ever noticed they were around. With these misfits, Bird creates a world where people are identified by their quirks rather than by their character. Then he makes a fatal mistake: He dies.   From the offices of The Love Department, Lady Dolores cures the heartaches of the lonely wives of Wimbledon with inimitable flourish and finesse. When the newest protégé, Edward Blakeston-Smith, is sent on a mission--to learn the secrets of seductive, scheming Septimus Tuam and stop him in his tracks--he learns about love and its friends and enemies.   In these early novels, one of the acclaimed masters of twentieth-century fiction created the dark landscape and compassionate characters that have become hallmarks of his extraordinary career.   "One of the very best writers of our era."--The Washington Post Book World   "Mr. Trevor's sheer intensity of entry into the lives of his people . . . proceeds to uncover new layers of yearning and pain, new angles of vision and credible thought."--The New York Times Book Review… (mehr)

Three short novels set among the dreary middle classes of London SW in the 1940s or 1950s. William Trevor is a master of the little detail that sets us saying Yes, that is what daily life is really like. While he writes of people whose lives seems boring and pointless, the story-lines are well developed and interesting. 'The Old Boys' is about the committee of an old school association; 'The Boarding-House' is about the gradual disintegration of a little community;, 'The Love Department' is about the seduction of bored housewives.

Three early novels by William Trevor assembled into a single volume. It’s difficult to find a more satisfying collection.

The Old Boys involves bumbling intrigue around the election of President for an association of former students of an English boarding school. Now in their 70s, the group gathers to commemorate school days. The school was supposed to mold men, but did a twisted job as judged by the result. The old boys all face loss as they age, most don’t handle it well.

A group of eccentrics live in a boarding house, having been assembled by the owner, Mr. Bird. After he dies and wills the house to two of the residents, with conditions attached, their personalities insure the transition will not go smoothly in The Boarding House.

In The Love Department an innocent and sensitive young man named Edward Blakeston-Smith is hired by Lady Dolores Bourhardie, a kind of lonely hearts correspondent for married women, to track down and create a dossier on a lothario known as Septimus Tuam who is victimizing rich married women in London. Edward learns more about life than he wishes.

These early novels are almost as masterful as Trevor’s later works, but are more playful and wry. They are equally pleasurable, only in a different manner. ( )

If there is such a genre as "the boarding house" novel, I'm a fan. I quite enjoyed the two I had read previously, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne by Brian Moore and Slaves of Solitude by Patrick Hamilton Trevor's novel seems to fit into the genre, although it is written more as a comedy than as a tragedy, as are the two I've previously read.

William Wagner Bird, owner of the boarding house, has carefully hand-selected his tenants. They are a varied group, but each has had trouble fitting into the "normal" world. After we are briefly introduced to the boarders, Mr. Bird abruptly dies. In his will, he leaves the boarding house to two of the boarders, with the proviso that all current residents can continue to board there as long as they choose. The two new owners are polar opposites, and detest each other. Thus, the fun begins.

This is one of Trevor's early novels, and it shows. The writing is competent, and the characters are eccentric without becoming caricatures. However, it didn't sparkle. I wouldn't necessarily recommend against your reading this book; I just am not very enthusiastic about it.

This review is for [The Boarding House], one of the novels included in this volume.
