I love just about everything Maureen Johnson has written her characters are great and I love her stories. Her series tend to be quite different from each other but they are all good in their own right. Maureen Johnson is not only a great writer but she is also amazing on Twitter I highly recommend following her. ( )

teen fic. The whole premise of this book would be unforgivably presumptuous if Ginnie's aunt hadn't been dying of a brain tumor at the time of her writing the letters. Everything does turn out all right in the end, though in real life it could easily have gone the other way. That all said, this was a quick and enjoyable teen read. ( )

My enjoyment of this book was hampered by the fact that I found Aunt Peg insufferably selfish and terrible. If I was Ginny's mother I don't know if I could ever forgive my baby sister for running away, not contacting me for months, and then dying without letting me say goodbye. To me Peg is a textbook example of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl and I can only handle them in very small doses because they are usually awful. This colored most of the book for me even though I like Johnson's style and thought that the international road trip sounded like lots of fun. I also thought that Ginny was a little bland but she had to be so that Peg could be more eccentric and special. ( )

I remember I first read it as distraction from other people when I was attending a feast 2-3 years ago. This is one of NPR's Top 100 Young Adult Books (in 2012).
For 2021 PopSugar Reading Challenge, this is perfect for "a book set in multiple countries" prompt.
This book got me engrossed for a while until I finally wondered "What's the point of all of these adventures?". The main protagonist thought of the same thing. (ha!)
Overall interesting and makes you wish you're traveling to other countries right now (thanks, covid).
Will definitely read its sequel later. I hope the content has different twist from this one, else we'll find it very predictable. ( )

Totally average and kind of boring. Also this book has a throwaway gay character whose only purpose was to tell the main character she is gay. That bothers me if it wasnt for that this book would have gotten 3 stars. ( )

Rule #1:
You may bring only what fits in your backpack. Don't try to fake it with a purse or a carry-on.

Rule #2:
You may not bring guidebooks, phrase books, or and kind of foreign language aid. And no journals.

Rule #3:
You cannot bring extra money or credit/debit cards, traveler's checks, etc. I'll take care of all of that.

Rule #4:
No electronic crutches. This means no laptop, no cell phone, no music, and no camera. You can't call home or communicate with people in the U.S. by internet or telephone. Postcards and letters are acceptable and encouraged.

That's all you need to know for now. See you at 4th Noodle.

Dear Ginger, I have been a great follower of rules.
As a rule, Ginny Blackstone tried to go unnoticed—something that was more or less impossible with thirty pounds (she'd weighed it) of purple-and-green backpack hanging from her back.
