This concept book focuses on the alphabet, while also learning different names of animals that start with each letter. It has pullout sections on each page that says what the letter is and the animal name.

This is a concept book from Caldecott Honor illustrator Suse MacDonald. As readers turn the brightly colored, die cut pages, shapes on each page come together to reveal a creature from long ago. Page by page, MacDonald’s bright, cut-paper, collage-style artwork transforms circles into eyes and triangles into scales until a familiar creature is revealed, with the aid of a large fold-out page, on the final spread.

This book uses cut-out pages to introduce a new shape each page. Each shape adds a detail to an image to eventually create a dinosaur.

This book is adorable and perfect for my special needs preschool students. The illustrations are colorful and fun and the text is very simple, one large print word on each page, and the text is styled in a way that fits perfectly with what's going on in the picture. Cute and unexpected and a perfect way to discuss letters, new vocabulary, and animal behaviors and characteristics with the littlest readers. A section in the back with further information on the animals for older readers. A unique book!

A is for ark. But did you know that if you turn an A upside down and round the point out a little, it becomes an ark? B is for balloon. But did you know that if you blow it up really big, the hole in the middle floats away like a balloon? In this wonderfully creative alphabet book, letters are pulled, twisted, reversed, and curled until they become part of what they represent. F becomes a fish, and Y becomes a yak!

Caldecott honor.?á
Goodness.?á Why have I never seen this book before?!?á My first-born arrived in 1985, the next in 1988, so this just the right age that this should have been hard to miss in our library trips.?á We all would have loved it, and probably tried our own hands at some transformations (I know S -> Snake is easy and fun for lots of kids).½

OWLS, NIGHT, COUNTING, NUMBERS
I love how the numbers are hiding inside the owl's wings. The owl is flying through the night and sees so many animals on each full page picture spread. This book is great for practicing numbers and counting plus working on number recognition in trying to find the numbers in the owl's wings. It also reads aloud in storytime really well. Like!

"Nanta's Lion" is a book about a girl who lives in a Maasai village in Africa who goes looking for the lion that has been stealing her village's cattle. Throughout the book, we watch her travel all the way to the neighboring village where sees many different animals but no lion. The book is very interactive and the pages are cut in an interesting way to reveal hidden images. Although I didn't notice it until the very last page, the picture of the lion begins to form just after the center spread. This is a very fun book that children will love and will also help them learn a little about another culture in Africa.½

Type: Alphabet
Recommended For: N-P
At twenty one, it can be hard to connect with alphabet books. Having known my alphabet since I was six, I haven't found myself reading these types of books in a long time. They certainly seem to have gotten more creative. Such is the case with Suse MacDonald's Alphabatics. MacDonald uses the letters of the alphabet in each colorful geometric print. A zebra's face is made up of several z's next to each other, a yak's head is made of the letter y. This could become a fun activity for students learning to write their letters, and can be used as a helpful reminder for howthey're supposed to look. There's a lot of white space on the pages, but this is effective at keeping the page from being cluttered and overwhelming. I will say that some of the letters don't translate into the drawings very clearly which is annoying to me and confusing for a child. The worst is the F in fish, which shows a nice looking, obvious fish on the right page and a clumsy drawing of a strangely square thing which looks like neither a fish, nor the letter F. Having said that, the book certainly is fun, and a good early introduction to the alphabet.

Summary: Alphabet book with letters that transform into the pictures each letter and word is describing.

Reflection: Fun, brightly colored pictures of letters and objects will entertain young readers. Letters are shown in both capital and lowercase which will help young children with letter identification.

This book is an alphabet book. It has a letter of the alphabet on each page of the book. Along with the letter, is a word that starts with that pages letter and a picture of what the word is. The illustrator also has pictures of the letter becoming the picture of the word. For example, letter "A" had the word Ark, a picture of an ark and four smaller pictures of an "A" drawn to look like an ark. The illustrator does this for each letter in the alphabet. I thought the letters turning into the pictures was a really good way to remember what letter a word starts with. This book's illustrations help captivate and entertain the reader.

I liked this book because it was very interactive. I think that this is a great book for children because it will keep them involved in the book, if someone is reading to them. I liked how the different pages turned into a lion at the end of the book. I think that children would really like that part as well.½

This is another culturally diverse book; Nanta is a an African girl who lives in the Maasai village. She is looking forward to helping the men,by herself, to scavenge and hunt for the disturbing lion who is stealing their cattle. Nanta then gets thirsty from her quest only to be sitting unknowingly by a lion whose resting just like her. It is a good adventure story that lets readers discover the lifestyle of these African villagers through Nanta's quest. The reader learns about the Maasai huts, the daily lives of the villagers as well as the farm life of these Masai people. This is a K-3 reading level book.

Alphabatics is a fun and creative way of introducing or reinforcing the alphabet to young readers. The letters tumble, somersault, and transform to become part of the picture that represents them. Some letters seem like a little bit of a stretch, but with some imagination it's not a problem. A very young reader might be confused by the concept, but it depends on the child.

This book provides a fresh and unique way of looking at a concept that might seem old to some students. Students could reinforce the concept in an imaginative way by creating their own pictures from letters.
