Of most interest to a cook, this book contains French recipes from 1393 for a young housewife to prepare, conveniently translated to English while preserving the older phrasing. The manuscript is first known to have been published in 1846. The translator's introduction notes that she left out some recipes and general instructions. It will be interesting to compare with the Falconwood Press translation of the recipes.

This is translation by the well-known pioneering economic/social historian Eileen Power of a book written by a 14th century Parisian bourgeois who had married a young wife and wrote this to guide her in becoming a good wife by the standards of the time. The first section is a strongly conventional explanation of how she should be obedient, virtuous and devout, with examples of the fate of those who were not. The second part is pratical advice on housekeeping, including gardening, selecting food and preparing it, which includes a number of recipes. ( )
