Bookends and Beginnings

Evanston is happily oversupplied with used book stores: Amaranth, Book Den, Chicago Rare Book Center, Howards, Market Fresh, Squeezebox, and until recently, Bookman's Alley.

Since the closure of Borders, though, we've only had one new bookstore (not counting the school bookstores catering to Northwestern)--and that a B&N chain location. There's news now that the Bookman's Alley site will be home to an independent new bookstore.

And, don't forget the Chicago-Main Newsstand (duh, at the corner of Chicago & Main, Evanston), a top notch and wide ranging magazine source. After all, if magazines were a little longer, they could be books. Well, maybe...

And, for me and other die hard map and atlas fans, especially historic or about history, George Ritzlin's shop at 1937 Central in Evanston with a stock of historic maps, atlases (they're books!) and the like.

In fact the Newsstand does have a little book section for contemporary Chicagoana. And they were selling 50 Shades of Grey at the counter for quite a few months.

I don't think it is possible for any place to be "oversupplied" with used book stores!
