Short story: American family injures a man who is winter personified

I read this short story in elementary school, maybe eight or nine years ago, and I haven't had luck finding it. Here's what I remember of the plot:

An American family, possibly from the Midwest (they lived on a farm, I think), accidentally hits a man with their car. The man doesn't talk. They take him into their house to make sure he's okay, and he ends up living with them for a while. It becomes apparent that the man is the personification of winter, and since he's living with them, autumn drags on for too long. Then he disappears, and winter begins.

It was narrated, I think, by a young girl. I remember a scene where she, her parents, and the man are having dinner, and the man does a little bit of magic?

Not a familiar plot to me, sad to say, but it sounds wonderful and I hope someone else recognizes it.

On a hunch I searched for books tagged "Jack Frost", figuring that was a likely name for the personification of winter, and the first thing to pop up was The Stranger by Chris van Allsburg; the plot as described in the reviews was more or less exactly that from kidnothing's post.
