Academic conferences can be great ways for academics to gather in person with others of like interests. Part of the conference involves giving presentations to an interested audience. However, an important part of this is the question and answer period where facets of the presentation topic can be explored. New sources of information and analysis may be shared. When I return home from a conference I feel energized to dig in to new research topics.

In my field of juvenile series books (think Tom Swift or Nancy Drew), the annual academic conference with regular presentations in this topic is the joint meeting of the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association. Since 1984 we have had a section of this group devoted to dime novels, pulp magazines, and juvenile series books. Many of these presentations have been packaged as articles in periodicals.

I have been attending this conference annually since 1992 and made presentations in each of those years except 1993 and 1994. I have been the area chair for more than a dozen of these years in two terms. The next conference will be held in San Diego, California on the Wednesday through Saturday before Easter, April 12-15, 2017. This year we have 14 presentations scheduled. Typically we have between 12 and 18 presentations.

Overall the conference is much larger with several hundred presentations in concurrent sessions. The range of subject areas and presentation topics is broad.

In our section and many others I have seen there are presentations from traditional scholars attached with institutions, grad students, emeritus professors, and independent scholars. All are welcome and taken seriously with the content of their presentation rather than the position within the academic strata.

What other conferences are good venues for independent scholars?

James
