>3 ahef1963:
The first one? Yes, it's still on my shelves. Despite the title, it's actually a rather humorous, sarcastic, anti-death penalty book.
Examples:
If the spirit of mercy, indicated by the gigantic mass-petition mentioned, continues at the rate at which it has grown of recent years, there is no saying where it may end. We may even see the abolition of war. What a disaster that would be!
I often wonder if these abolitionist fully realize what they are up to, and that in this commercial and financial age they are endangering the bank balances of a whole host of people who are directly interested in hanging from a purely material point of view . . . Hemp-pickers, rope-manufacturers, carpenters, painters, boltmakers, the makers of eyelets for the hangman's rope, printers who print the Book of Prayer used for the Burial Service of condemned men, lime merchants who proved the lime in which hanged convicts are often buried, and a host of others too numerous to mention would suffer severe financial losses if hanging were abolished in this realm.
Etc.
It was first published in 1928; mine is the New and Enlarged Edition of 1938.
