Good background, as others mention it mostly consists of accounts from people that were actually there. I agree that paints a vivd picture of what it was like to be there. Important that such accounts get preserved. .Light on historical perspective of what was going on.

Really enjoyed this history of the remote base in the Orkneys, used by the Royal Navy in both World Wars, and told through the recollections of ordinary people who served there (the book was reprinted from the late 1960s). It brought to life the hardships and also the way life was lived aboard the various ships of the time. So a well deserved 5 stars.

The closing chapter about the closing of the base--and what it has meant to the people who served there--is especially poignant. One day I will have to go see this remote, extraordinary place for myself.… (mehr)

In the summer of 1940 Britain stood alone as Nazi Germany was swiftly tightening its grip on Europe. Hitler's forces appeared to be invincible, having swept through Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Invasion seemed inevitable as the Fuhrer's eyes turned to Britain, isolated against the might of fascism. But Hitler reckoned without the indomitable will and spirit of the British people and their leader, Winston Churchill.
