Über den Autor

Lawrence Durrell was born on February 27, 1912 in Jullundur, India to British parents. During World War II, he served as a British press officer. His first novel, Pied Piper of Lovers, was published in 1935, but was considered a failure. Some of his other works include The Black Book, The mehr anzeigen Alexandria Quartet, The Avignon Quintet, and Caesar's Vast Ghost: A Portrait of Provence. Justine: The Alexandria Quartet, Book 1 von Lawrence Durrell

Reread after many years. The narrators struggle to balance relations with two women remind me of country western song--Trying to love two women is like a ball and chain. Books ends with killing (accidental? murder?) of man who had raped Justine in her youth and death of Melissa, her rival with narrator.

The Alexandria Quartet von Lawrence Durrell

I read 80 pages into the first of the quartet -- Justine, and gave up. There were too many words and they said nothing to me.

The Avignon Quintet: Monsieur, Livia, Constance,… von Lawrence Durrell

It looks like I'm the only Goodreads member who didn't like this book. It may well be the masterpiece that everyone says it is, but it wasn't saying anything to me and it was doing that in thousands upon thousands of words.
