Upcoming Fine Press Books

1CTPress-Tony
Feb. 10, 2022, 10:44 am

With so many presses, old and new, producing wonderful books, it’s a great time to be a collector. I’ve created a new page on The Book Blog with upcoming fine press books. If there’s something that you think would be a good fit here feel free to email me (contact page on the website) or leave a message here.

>1 CTPress-Tony: This is outstanding! Arion's next 3 releases are known. Also maybe include Thornwillow (leaving out the dispatches?). The inclusion of Books Illustrated is interesting. It looks like your list is focused on "pure" fine presses (or private presses) which only do letterpress publications. Books Illustrated has one letterpress book so far, and none of their numerous other publications have been letterpress - if occasional letterpress publishers are included this would include Suntup and Curious King (and even Centipede has 2 planned letterpress pubs I think). TOC Berlin could be another candidate for inclusion. You are also leaving out a lot of other presses such as Angel Bomb , Pegana etc. but the line has to be drawn somewhere...

>1 CTPress-Tony: Good stuff, thank you!

I believe the next Lyra’s Books title - "The Picture of Dorian Gray" - is public now. It's also the first to come under their Lyra’s Classics imprint.

>3 punkzip: From the ones you named, Pegana is definitely a fine press well-worthy of inclusion, with multiple upcoming editions announced!

Curious King has yet to publish their own title, but they are advertising as a fine press in collaboration with Rich Tong and do have an upcoming title (The Blade Itself).

Angel Bomb and ToC both print letterpress, true, but don't really represent themselves as fine presses or otherwise aim for fine press publishing goals, though both make very nice productions.

To include Suntup or not is an age-old question, but in this case they really don't announce far enough ahead to be worth including in a blog IMO.

>1 CTPress-Tony: Great that someone is keeping tabs on everything, thanks! You could also add Nomad Letterpress / Whittington Press (Pages from Presses II recently announced, and Oiseaux de France - anyone ordered that one?). Also, Hand and Eye's WITW is still technically forthcoming...and available.

>4 Shadekeep: I see that both Dorian Gray and A Christmas Carol are already included under 'Lyra's Classics'. The next 'Lyra's Press' book has yet to be announced.

Just spoke with Katie Beard at Rooksmoor Press. Her forthcoming title Minstrel's Song from Ælla is expected to be completed May or June and will be offered for £30. She has placed me on the subscription list and I would expect would do the same for anyone else interested in this title. I think this could make both a beautiful and affordable acquisition for those of us who are newer to fine press and/or on a budget.

This little booklet will join the Golden Cockerel Press printing of Cats (Les Chats)by Moncrif.

>20 Glacierman: Sorry to hijack the thread (but since it's about cats . . . ) some additional fine press cat books you might also like:

Mark Twain Concerning Cats: Two Tales, San Francisco: The Book Club of San Francisco (1959). Printed at the Grabhorn Press for The Colt Press. 450 copies.

Chester Bailey Fernald The Cat and the Cherub. Berkeley: Printed for A.M. Bender by Wilder & Ellen Bentley (1938). Illustrated by Lloyd Hoff. 150 copies.

David Catt My Ascent of Grizzly Peak: The Adventures of a Middle-Aged Gentleman (1950). 16pp. Frontispiece of the author. Handset type. Original stiff marbled wrappers, white label printed in black on front cover. One of only 50 copies printed for the friends of David Catt at the Grabhorn Press by his 'Benefactors,' Dorothy and Jane Grabhorn, and David Magee. The Grabhorn bibliography states, quite honestly, that "This book is for aelurophiles, not mountaineers." Yes, in fact, David Catt was a Tabby. Grabhorn 503.

Jane Grabhorn One Hundred & Sixty Cats Proverbs & Proverbial Similes San Francisco: Grabhorn-Hoyem (1969). "This edition is limited to 300 copies printed by Robert Grabhorn & Andrew Hoyem San Francisco, California March 1969 WASITA CATISAW".

And, of course, T.S. Eliot Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. London: Faber & Faber (1939). 3,005 copies.

Red Hydra Press puts out a couple canine-themed titles, ZEKE and The Dogs of Havana. And if there's a fine press edition of J. R. Ackerley's My Dog Tulip, that would be a good one too.

Received further information on the upcoming Letters from Titanic. This is from the prospectus and his reply:

This limited edition collates a selection of the most moving and poignant letters
and postcards to be sent from RMS Titanic, prior to her untimely sinking
in the early hours of 15 April 1912. Carefully curated by George Behe, this
selection of letters tells the lamentable story in the unique and powerful way
only true first-hand accounts can. Included are biographies of each writer, and
an introduction by George Behe.

Set and cast in ‘Monotype’ Imprint with Gill Sans Light and Caslon display.
The Imprint typeface was designed in 1912, the year of Titanic’s fateful voyage.
In the same spirit of pioneering technology, it was the first type to be designed
specifically for machine composition and was to prove that new technology
could be just as good as the traditional hand-composed type.

This edition will be letterpress-printed on 150gsm Bockingford mould-made
paper and hand bound at the craft bindery of Blissetts, Royal Warrant Holders
in London. Each copy will contain a piece of letterpress printed ephemera,
reproduced from original material.

Only 250 numbered copies of this edition will be printed,
priced at £300 per copy, publishing Autumn 2022

For pre-orders and enquiries please contact Ian Pearson:
ipearson@thehistorypress.co.uk

Typeset and cast by Gloucester Typesetting Services, designed by
Rooksmoor Press and letterpress-printed at the Stonehouse Fine Press

Copies can be reserved with an initial deposit of £75. The book is a numbered edition, and numbers will be allocated as we receive deposits.

By writing to him in advance you should be able to place a deposit a week before it is opened to the public for subscribing, thus ensuring your copy ahead of time. He can also send you a prospectus PDF and color sample PDF.

New book coming from Black Letter Press - Pantographia. Here's the blurb on it:

Pantographia by Edmund Fry, London 1799, contains more than two hundred alphabets. This book is full of curiosities, like Chaldean 1. Fry traces this to the French scholar and astrologer Jacques Gaffarel (1601 - 1681). There is a woodcut depicting the hemispheres and their constellations, from which Fry drew his Cælestial alphabet. Gaffarel in turn borrowed the alphabet from Guillaume Postel (1510 - 1581), the polyglot French linguist, astronomer, Christian Cabalist, and diplomat. However, Postel was not its creator; it first appeared in the third book of Agrippa’s De Occulta Philosophia.

They are taking preorders now with a 15% discount. Since shipping is pretty high I usually pad my orders from them with another book. This time I grabbed Melville's Timoleon & Other Ventures in Minor Verse.

>42 CTPress-Tony: Excellent, thank you!

>43 RRCBS: I would say there is more variance from book-to-book than FS, in terms of the cover style and paper used. Their books strongly remind me of those I have owned from the early 1900s, as many have soft tooled, ornate covers. The papers are generally firm and bright. I certainly think they are worth the asking prices, particularly for those titles which are difficult to find in a decent edition otherwise. Someone more experienced here could weigh on the exact merits of things like the binding and such, but personally I am quite happy with their work. I'd be happy to provide further insight into any particular titles you are considering which I have bought.

I agree that they are nice editions.

>46 ultrarightist: I do have the Emblemata volume, it is my favorite book from them so far. It is superb in both contents and construction. Natural Magick is a fine book as well, but if I were going to recommend any single volume from this imprint, it would be Emblemata.

Centipede: At the Mountains of Madness (letterpress)

After reading last week's newsletter from The Old School Press, I reserved a copy of their upcoming Washi Memories.

I think the combination of text including recollections from the papermakers, large number of black and white photographs from the 1950s, plus the tipped in samples of beautiful Japanese papers, is going to make this book something quite special. Not to mention typically excellent printing from the Old School Press, Japanese calligraphy, and the suminagashi paper for the binding!

In one of the previous updates, they mentioned that there will be no de-luxe copies: "we've decided to throw everything at the standard copies".

A quick summary of books that are scheduled to be published in the remainder of 2023 (note: we all know how THAT goes!!) that are of particular interest. This is NOT a comprehensive listing of all fine & private press books due later this year. Rather, it is a list of books I have already subscribed to and reserved that I think warrant a closer look from members of the LT FPP. In no particular order:

1. Washi Memories - The Old School Press
2. The Moon Moth by Jack Vance - the Cordes Press
3. The Death of Ivan Ilyich - No Reply Press (NRP)
4. Sci-fi trilogy (Omelas, The Men Return and The Last Question) - NRP
5. M. Arden of Feversham - Tudor Black Press
6. Peter Pan with Charles Vess illustrations - Conversation Tree Press
7. Coraline - Lyra's Books
8. The Beauty of Byrne - St. James Park Press. Note: Animal Farm is due to be published in 2023 as well, but it has sold out.
9. Greenboathouse Press - If the Wind Comes. A poetry collection from proprietor Jason Dewinetz

The Old School Press is one of those private presses I try to find excuses for buying from if the book is remotely of interest. Most of their bibliography involves the history of typography and printing, especially as it relates to the history of the now-defunct Oxford University Press. However, their series of books involving Venice and their recent edition of Washi Memories, regarding the rapidly fading art of handmade papermaking in Japan, are well worth seeking out. Martyn Ould does some wonderful stuff and at very reasonable prices.

I think the Palladio book is great. It was one of the first expensive fine press books I bought and is still a favourite. I remember at the time I couldn't believe I was spending this much on a single book! Now, in the current landscape, it seems like very good value for such a large (14" x 10") and substantial volume, flawlessly printed on handmade Italian paper. I guess the subject matter might feel a bit niche to some, but the whole production really carries the day. The paper used for the boards has a genuine wow factor.

I'm also really looking forward to their revised edition of Twelve Poems from the Manyoshu. I'm sure it will still be a splendid book with the woodcut illustrations now printed digitally.

If you wish to add another title from The Old School Press to your collections, I have a suggestion for a delightful older edition that has been overlooked:

Tonge's Travels by George Tonge, 2001.

This is the diary of an undergraduate at University of Oxford touring the Mediterranean by boat during the summer of 1857. Rather than doing the traditional Grand Tour of the notable European capitals and cultural centers during the summer between his first and second year, Tonge decided to board a tramp steamer heading to the Mediterranean in search of a cargo of currants. This alone should tell you that George Tonge was not wrapped very tightly and was not your typical Oxford undergraduate. The ten-week journey takes him to Gibraltar, Genoa, Pisa, Naples, Vesuvius, Pompeii, Corinth, Athens and back via Algiers. The trip is a series of misadventures and Tonge proves to be a very sharp and slightly sarcastic observer of the mayhem that ensues.

The book is rectangular (230 x 300 mm) and it is letterpress printed on Mohawk Superfine paper. Portions of Tonge's account are handwritten in the wide page margins by calligrapher Patricia Gidney and printed letterpress as well. It is profusely illustrated with an original suite of watercolors and B & W sketches by John Watt. The dustwrapper is illustrated with a sketch that wraps around the covers and it is also printed letterpress. The watercolors are evocative and capture the various Mediterranean scenes and cities beautifully. Aside from its large size, this book has a very Barbarian Press feel to it. It was issued as 290 bound copies and 40 loose copies for binders. (see link)

https://theoldschoolpress.com/bookpages/TT.htm

The cost? An astonishing 80 GBP!

Treat yourself and pick up a copy as an inexpensive Holiday Season present to yourselves. Trust the dlphcoracl on this one.

In addition to >133 paulm16:, here are a couple more internal pics showing the illustrations for the sections on Pompeii, Athens and Corinth in Tonge's Travels. In the latter you can see an example of the handwritten excerpts at the bottom of the page. I agree with >130 dlphcoracl: about all the merits of this book. I have to confess I haven't read it yet, so I'm pleased to hear the enthusiasm for the text itself. Underneath the attractive dust-jacket it's a completely unadorned brown cloth binding; an appropriate choice for a diary.

The price does seem remarkably low for a book of this length, quality, and with all the different elements involved.

Hi all -

just to clarify what is admittedly a muddy story: the copies issued in a box contain all 8 of the aquatints being created for the project; the copies in a slipcase contain just 5 (tho not all the same five...). Also, some of the interior aspects of the binding for the boxed copies will be different. And there might be something else in the box, we'll have to see. But dlphcoracl is essentially correct: much of the premium reflects the additional prints, in the book & portfolio.
