An interesting take on the second world war through the eyes of a few sets of characters who interact in various places. It deals primarily with the love triangle between two women, and also the relationship in prison of two men, and shows them in different time periods, starting off later, so we eventually see how they ended up how they are in the later post-war period. La acción se sitúa en 1947, 1944 y 1941: retrocediendo en el tiempo iremos descubriendo exactamente en qué medida afectó la experiencia de la guerra a estos personajes y se irá revelando la verdadera naturaleza de sus comportamientos actuales, así como la dimensión del laberinto sentimental en el que están atrapados y las inesperadas relaciones existentes entre ellos. Además de ser una conmovedora historia de amor y traición en tiempos de guerra, en Ronda nocturna, la mejor novela de Sarah Waters, se retratan los sueños rotos de toda una generación y se diseccionan las costumbres y la moral de la sociedad británica de posguerra.

While I really enjoyed the depiction of war time London and the way the story is told (backwards through time starting in 1947 and ending in 1941), what I didn't love was that I have so many questions still left at the end. There were some things I still really wanted to know more about, such as Mr Mundy and Duncan's relationship, and how Kay and Helen eventually split up (or rather, how Helen broke the news to Kay), and how Viv decided to stay with Reggie even after he abandoned her when she needed him most. Those questions, unfortunately, left me wanting more out of the book than I got. I found myself enjoying the first part a lot more than the subsequent parts, really. However, still a good book with some fantastically good queer representation. ( )

Sarah Waters is a goddess. As one reviewer wrote, she could make watching paint dry seem fascinating. ( )

Another book that has been on my shelf forever. Sadly I didn't like this one much at all. "Fingersmith" and "Affinity" are brilliant books - "Night Watch" is booooooring. I couldn't keep track of who was who and had to keep checking nor did I care about any of them. I did get to the end but I was really glad to get there. Has put me off any more of Sarah Waters books a bit. ( )
