To Get Works Combined Anyway
Post a request to this thread. Please be sure to include links to each work you want combined.
For example:
Please combine these two works:
http://www.librarything.com/work/5061284
http://www.librarything.com/work/11847113
If it's not obvious that the two works are the same (different title/authors/etc.), it may be helpful if you jot down a few sentences to explain that. But please be sure they really do need to be combined. Keep in mind that different editions with significant textual changes (a original publication versus a later "uncut" version) are treated as different books. Minor changes (like a later version containing a new forward, a new edition with/without illustrations, etc.) do generally belong together in the same work, as do different versions of the same work in different languages.
For help combining works that would affect fewer than 200 copies, please post to the current "Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread". This thread can be found in the Combiners! group (a new thread is created each month to prevent it from becoming cumbersome).
The Problem
You cannot easily combine two works if BOTH works contain a large number of copies (currently the limit is 200 copies). For example, if you try to combine The Dark Tower (having over 6,000 copies) with The Dark Tower Boxed Set (Books 1-4) (having over 500 copies) you will receive this error:
Sorry, too much love! Because of a number of massive over-combinations (eg., every book by C. S. Lewis combined into one) combinations that change more than 200 books have been disabled, except for LibraryThing staff, until we work out some rules.
See the WikiThing page, http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Combination_Blocking, for more information.
You were attempting to combine the works: 5974, 49836
In this case, this error prevents you from combining two works that really should not be combined. However, sometimes it does prevent legitimate combinations. Though the message says only LibraryThing staff may combine these books, that's not entirely true. There are ways to finagle it to combine them, but because of the possibility of harm they aren't really broadcast (but if you know enough to ask...)
As such, the previous thread on this topic ended with LibraryThing members volunteering to combine these "too much love" works for other users.

Looks like the latter was stuck in the disambiguation for Stephen King until I just moved it to the correct author entry. As far as I can tell they're both the Uncut/Extended version of The Stand, though.

The Blade Runner edition I own has both titles on the cover, and is not anything like the movie though the cover shows the movie characters.

Here's what looks like a "Too Much Love" problem. There are currently three LT works representing Dan Ariely's "Predictably Irrational".
According to Common Knowledge (and my own searching agrees) this is a revised and expanded edition from 2009:
https://www.librarything.com/work/13468594/
And this is the original edition form 2008:
https://www.librarything.com/work/4179539/
The issue is this other edition that doesn't have any Common Knowledge relevant to which version it is:
https://www.librarything.com/work/13468633/
Each of the three works has more than 900 copies. The work 13468633 has almost all of its copies in an entry with ISBN 006135323X. While there are entries in each of the other two that are labeled with this ISBN, the original edition (work 4179539) contains many more entries and many more copies using that. This also matches what I've found in searching the internet for that ISBN. And there are no mentions of "revised" or "expanded" in the titles included in work 13468633.
So unless someone can see something I'm missing here, could someone please combine these two works:
https://www.librarything.com/work/4179539/

Please combine the different editions of W.E.B Du Bois' Souls of Black Folk. There is also one called Souls of Black People that I think should be included. Thanks.

There are two different editions that contain supplemental material, as well as others stating they have more than just the core work ("related readings," "other writings" etc). These should not be combined.

In 1968, Philip K. Dick wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, a brilliant sf novel that became the source of the motion picture Blade Runner. Though the novel's characters and backgrounds differ in some respects from those of the film, readers who enjoy the latter will discover an added dimension on encountering the original work. Del Rey Books is pleased to return this classic novel to print.I've read this edition and it is not a novelization or a simplified version; it is a re-titled tie-in edition of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep so it should be combined.

According to WorldCat records, the 3rd Edition first appeared in 2000, but each ISBN after 2003 until the 4th Edition (2015) seems to have been a "Special Edition," "Special 3rd Edition," or (in German) a "4. {fourth} updated and expanded Edition, from the Special Edition." That seemed to be a significant distinction for WorldCat; but, if anyone who knows both editions well disagrees, we can recombine them at a later date.

>67 hipdeep:, >68 MarthaJeanne:, >70 Jarandel: I recently did a great deal of the separating and recombining on this Work to distinguish between four editions having different content, including advice from a family member who knows the Author and is familiar with the Work. I'm unsure how it escaped Disambiguation Notices before, but I've re-separated the first (1997) and revised (1999) editions, and added DNs across the board to highlight the differences. I know this isn't what was requested or expected, and I'll defer to others if the separations are inappropriate; but if we would distinguish based on different, new or additional content, I understand that's what we have here. All responses are welcome, and correct me if I'm wrong!

>71 jasbro: Thanks for chiming in! If you consulted with someone more familiar with the different editions than I am, I'll defer to their judgement. (I've met Dr. Tatum - who's wonderful - but I'm not familiar with the different editions of this title.)
However, my understanding of "the cocktail party rule" is that new afterwords and forewords are not what's intended to be understood as "additional material". As I understand it, that's more for things like critical annotated editions or major revisions which really change the argument of the text. Similarly, there's a difference between the "revised editions" which introduce new chapters or cover new areas of argument, and the ones which basically just update statistics or examples. Again, I defer to people who looked closer at this title, but it remains my general position that I'd only want to see major changes separated, not minor ones. For things like touchstones, lists, and the recommender, it seems that we'd get better user experiences with the editions combined.

https://www.librarything.com/work/14321538/editions (tenth anniversary / "author's preferred text" edition)

I would do it but one of the entries in the original edition is a 900-copy one. Could somebody move those 0755322819 entries over to the tenth anniversary edition?

These two Sherlock Holmes omnibus works should be combined, as both contain exactly the same familiar canon of 56 short stories and 4 novels.

Here's an awkward situation regarding Stephen King's "Apt Pupil". It was published as one of four novellas in "Different Seasons":
https://www.librarything.com/work/1482/editions
There is also a separate LT entry for the novella "Apt Pupil" only:
https://www.librarything.com/work/16162329/editions
But there is also the following entry which has ISBN of "Different Seasons" though a couple of the items in it have other titles like "Apt Pupil : A Novella in Different Seasons".
https://www.librarything.com/work/16160575/editions
It's not obvious what to do -- it could either be merged in with work 1482, or it could be split and the individual parts merged as appropriate (though they share the same ISBN). However, it's more than 200 copies so I can't do it anyway.

I mostly go by the rule that title takes precedence over ISBN. If a typical user catalogs a work, and the title is wrong, they're likely to fix the title. If the ISBN is wrong, they probably won't notice. I would combine editions that clearly refer to the novella Apt Pupil with the main Apt Pupil work, even if they have the ISBN of Different Seasons.
Oh, and clearly "Apt Pupil" is the same work as "Apt Pupil: A Novella in Different Seasons". It doesn't matter if the work is published on its own, or as part of another work, or as an unabridged audiobook, or as an ebook - if it's the same work (in the general sense of authored words), it's the same work (in the LibraryThing sense).

That's the "split by title" option then, which sounds reasonable and is usually my preference too. Some of the components are pretty clear going by title, some aren't, and some are translations which I'm not sure about without more investigation. The 200+ copy one is the "Apt Pupil: A Novella in Different Seasons" which should be put into "Apt Pupil" then.
From a quick glance there are several in "Different Seasons" that could be sorted out to the individual novellas as well; I can look into that later.

I split off one edition titled "Different Seasons" and combined that with "Different Seasons". The rest I've combined with the main Apt Pupil work. It looks like there are quite a few things combined in with Different Seasons that should be separated out and combined appropriately. For example, "De leerling" is the Dutch translation of "Apt Pupil";
81scott_beeler
Thanks. Some translations can be tricky because they take a particular story title to use as the title for the whole collection. Since these works are a little messy I'm going to work my way through them as I can by looking at ISBNs. For example, "Verano de Corrupcion" is the Spanish translation of the summer "season" which is/contains "Apt Pupil" but also the title of an edition containing 2 of the 4 novellas (spring/summer). Arrr.

Has there been discussion about whether those should actually be separated in the first place?
86scott_beeler
For some works' "revised" editions I would think it arguable whether or not they're different enough to be a distinct work, but the revised "Stand" is substantially different (just in terms of amount of material, it's ~1200 pages compared to the ~800 page original) so I think it's clearly distinct.
From memory I'm pretty sure this lines up with LibraryThing policy, but I can't point to specific discussions.

87.Monkey.
Policy is "cocktail party" - if people were chatting about the book and had read the different versions, would they be talking about the same thing or would there be confusion. I'd be surprised if this one wasn't discussed previously, but I suppose it's possible.
88r.orrison
I'd say the two should be separated, though I'm far from an expert on the works. I'm not sure if https://www.librarything.com/work/20933193/covers should be combined with either, though. The ISBN may belong to the Complete and Uncut Edition, but members have uploaded covers for the shorter version. I suspect that many people search for The Stand and add whatever they get, without regard to the ISBN, and then upload the correct cover for their copy.
89jasbro
Please do not combine The Stand (1978) with The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition (1990). The latter edition contains over 300 pages of new material and includes subplots and characters not included in the 1978 edition.
90scott_beeler
I agree that there are surely some people who have entry 20933193 but mean it to be the original 1978 "Stand", but I don't think that should stop us from merging 20933193 in appropriately with the Complete and Uncut "Stand". The incorrect cover uploads are user error (understandable, but still) and we shouldn't allow user error from a small number of people to interfere with the correct allocation of (in this case) 1500+ users' entries.
If there's no other information, using cover uploads to evaluate an entry is fine, but when there's direct evidence in the form of an ISBN or clear title I would give that precedence.

91r.orrison
I don't think the uploaded cover is user error - they're not likely to upload a picture of a cover they don't have. I think the user error is the ISBN.
92scott_beeler
Sorry, I meant in the sense of wrong cover for that ISBN (because they chose the wrong ISBN for their copy). I don't think we should keep this entry separate from the main entry because a small number of people have misidentified it.

>90 scott_beeler: >91 r.orrison: >92 scott_beeler: I agree that cover seems to take precedence over ISBN. I usually look at the cover when adding books, not the ISBN, because I'm more likely to incorrectly recall or read a string of numbers than an image of a book I have in hand. And I've definitely had a few books that I scanned with the app that still somehow had the wrong ISBN, but if I found a matching work by cover and title, I told myself I'd sort the ISBN issue later (then promptly had to put my books in storage for the upteenth time...).

96scott_beeler
>94 Faranae: Faranae: I understand what you mean about entering your book by cover, but I just don't get how we can reasonably sort the LT database that way. In the case I brought up of entry 20933193, it has 23 member-uploaded covers, about half for the original version and half for the expanded version of "The Stand". The original-version covers are used by about 50 LT members, and the expanded-version covers by about 50 LT members as well. There are also 2 covers from amazon, both for the expanded version, which are used by the other 1400+ LT members (since it's the default -- and what shows up on the Add Books page, by the way, so I think also by your enter-by-cover criteria in this case it should go with the expanded version entry 1242461 with the others of its ISBN).
Whichever version this entry gets put into (original or expanded), there will be people with the wrong cover for that work. We can't split this one entry to get each set of covers to the appropriate work because they're all attached to the same discrete thing. One option is to merge it with what seems like the most appropriate work by some criterion, such as ISBN which is a specific indicator attached to all 1500+ copies of this work, rather than just 50 or so; this is what I think should be done. The other option is to leave it separate and unmerged with either, but that will just lead to a splintering of the database as there are millions of works that have differing covers uploaded and could be split off -- we might have tens or hundreds of different entries for "The Stand" which are indeterminate in terms of covers.
Anyway, I don't have skin in this game, I don't even have any copy of "The Stand". I was just doing some cleanup of Stephen King and brought this up in doing so due to the Too Much Love limit.

>96 scott_beeler: I have no skin in this game, either. I don't own a single Stephen King book! I was really more commenting on the general approach to edition issues when combining and what I suspect user behavior might be. As the first rule of Combining is "do no harm," the question is whether the 50 or so people would be harmed by this change (since the rule takes as a given that status quo is good enough - not ideal, but preferable to new harm).

Hello there,
I was adding the graphic novel nersion of the Hobbit to my collection and kept finding myself redirected to the Novel.
I split https://www.librarything.com/work/22837446 off from https://www.librarything.com/work/3206242 as I believed it was the graphic novel version https://www.librarything.com/work/14184045. I am now not sure about this.
There is certainly some confusion in the editions, I think all the ones with the subtitle "An Illustrated Edition of the Fantasy Classic" should be under the graphic novel.
Amazon mixes up the ISBN numbers, listing the mass market paperback ISBN-10 0261102214 for the graphic novel when it should be 0345368584 https://www.amazon.com/J-R-R-Tolkiens-Hobbit-Illustrated-Fantasy/dp/0345368584/ which means that when using the app to import it combines with the novel version.
I don't know what the solution might be, however the work I split off should be recombined back into one of the main Hobbit works.
Thanks.

>138 Forficule: At least some of the copies in that edition are the graphic novel. See the reviews and the possible other authors. WorldCat connects that ISBN to the film tie-in edition. It might be better to put in disambiguation to say that the title and ISBN don't match, but that correcting one or the other in a members catalogue would allow a copy to be separated out and correctly combined.

Crap. I had just added my Doubleday & Company copy, isbn 1568651198 and it auto-combined to the wrong Little Women. That editions page is an unholy mess.
168r.orrison
I've pulled out two clearly adapted/abridged editions. Most of what's left there looks like it belongs there. I don't see any obvious films. Is ISBN 1568651198 different from the main work?

These two records both appear (to me) to be the same work, but cannot be combined due to the number of copies affected. Would someone be able to confirm/fix? Thank you.

Dracula's Guest And Other Weird Tales is the original title of a collection of nine short stories by Bram Stoker; it is now usually reissued just as Dracula's Guest. Penguin however continues to use the original title which is probably how we've ended up with two equally crowded listings. :)
Note that there are also listings for the title story alone but I think I have separated them all out from the work.

>178 Shortride: Works like that that have gone through many editions and revisions over time (since 1941) are generally broken down into works depending on when major changes were made. Change of title is an easy break.
Current edition seems to be 19th from 2017 (848 pages). That is certainly a very different work from the revised 13th of 1998 (632 pages) or the fifth edition, 1962, 502 pages.
The 18th, 2012 (813) seems very similar.

As far as I can see, https://www.librarything.com/work/17267504/editions and https://www.librarything.com/work/23409259/editions are the same work. If the special rehearsal edition is actually a separate work, there's another job here :).
182MarthaJeanne
The top edition on the first of those was a two book bundle. Separated and work-to-work relationships entered. I suggest that checking it through for more problems would be a good idea before any combining.

Please combine:

https://www.librarything.com/work/3373
The former are editions with ISBN 0-451-52219-2 which I separated out of the Lilliput & Brobdignag edition. I have a copy in hand, and it definitely has all four voyages, and is 320 pages, and is as far as I can tell unabridged. (I added the correct last words--these match the ones in the main work page.)
And I'd love to know how to combine works despite the error!

These 2 pages need to be combined. They’re for Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me,Updated Edition which contains additional essays. I separated them out from the original edition but I’m getting the Too Much Love message when I try to combine them myself. Can anyone help? Many thanks!

>194 SimoneA: https://www.librarything.com/work/22837446 has two member-uploaded cover images of the graphic novel adaptation (https://www.librarything.com/work/14184045 which should be kept separate), but the ISBN and some of the tags seem to indicate that it's an illustrated edition of the main work. I don't think it should be combined with either, and I'm normally a lumper.

2) Of your three links, the first and third are the same work. The other one only has 1 copy, so is not a problem to combine.
