Über den Autor

Orson Scott Byron Walley Card, was born in 1951 and studied theater at Brigham Young University. He received his B.A. in 1975 and his M.A. in English in 1981. He wrote plays during that time, including Stone Tables (1973) and the musical, Father, Mother, Mother and Mom (1974). A Mormon, Scott mehr anzeigen served a two-year mission in Brazil before starting work as a journalist in Utah. He also designed games at Lucas Film Games, 1989-92. He is best known for his science fiction novels, including the popular Ender series. Well known titles include A Planet Called Treason (1979), Treasure Box (1996), and Heartfire (1998). He has also written the guide called How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy (1990). His novel Ender's Game and its sequel Speaker for the Dead, both won Hugo and Nebula awards, making Card the only author to win both prizes in consecutive years. His titles Shadows in Flight, Ruins and Ender's Game made The New York Times Best Seller List. Kurzbiographie: Orson Scott Card is the author of the novels Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and Speaker for the Dead, which are widely read by adults and younger readers, and are increasingly used in schools. His most recent series, the young adult Pathfinder series (Pathfinder, Ruins, Visitors) and the fantasy Mithermages series (Lost Gate, Gate Thief, Gatefather) are taking readers in new directions.

Besides these and other science fiction novels, Card writes contemporary fantasy (Magic Street, Enchantment, Lost Boys), biblical novels (Stone Tables, Rachel and Leah), the American frontier fantasy series The Tales of Alvin Maker (beginning with Seventh Son), poetry (An Open Book), and many plays and scripts, including his "freshened" Shakespeare scripts for Romeo & Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, and The Merchant of Venice.

Card was born in Washington and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he teaches occasional classes and workshops and directs plays. He frequently teaches writing and literature courses at Southern Virginia University.

Card currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with his wife, Kristine Allen Card, where his primary activities are writing a review column for the local Rhinoceros Times and feeding birds, squirrels, chipmunks, possums, and raccoons on the patio.

Das große Spiel: Roman - Mit einem Vorwort… von Orson Scott Card

Als "Ender's Game" im Jahre 1985 erschien, wurde es noch im selben Jahr zu einem überwältigenden und zugleich überraschenden Erfolg. Card hatte eine knapp zehn Jahre zuvor geschriebene Kurzgeschichte, seine erste SF-Veröffentlichung, zu einem Roman umgeschrieben, um sie als Einleitung - quasi als Prequel - zu einem anderen Buch, "Der Sprecher der Toten", an dem er gerade arbeitete, herauszubringen. Daraus wurde dann sein größter Erfolg: Mit dem Hugo- und dem Nebula-Award gewann er im gleichen Jahr zwei der renommiertesten SF-Preise. Die Verkaufszahlen bewirkten, dass er sich von da an ganz auf das Schreiben konzentrieren konnte. Sogar angesehene Zeitungen wie die New York Times besprachen das Buch positiv. Doch genauso wie es überaus positive Kritiken gab, schlugen dem Roman vernichtende Meinungen entgegen; kaum ein Science Fiction-Buch hatte je so polarisiert, obwohl gerade dieses Genre dafür ja geradezu prädestiniert ist. Zwar beteuert Card, eine möglichst geradlinige Erzählung geschrieben zu haben, und verwendet sogar einen Teil seiner Vorbemerkung zur Neuauflage darauf, zu beschreiben, dass er den Roman "so klar und zugänglich wie möglich zu schreiben" bemüht war. Aber trotzdem ist eine Geschichte entstanden, die viel Raum für Interpretationen ermöglicht, vor allem, wenn man sie in ihrer Gesamtheit, in ihrem zeitlichen Erscheinungsrahmen (Stichwort "Kalter Krieg") und vor dem Hintergrund des Autors als gläubigem Mormonen beleuchtet.

Doch lassen wir erst einmal die Interpretationen und was man von ihnen halten soll beiseite und gehen zunächst von der Geschichte als solcher aus: Die Erde wurde vor Jahrzehnten von insektenartigen Aliens angegriffen, konnte diese aber zurückschlagen und bereitet sich nun auf die nächste Invasion vor. Dafür rekrutiert sie den sechsjährigen Ender Wiggin, der zum größten Befehlshaber aller Zeiten ausgebildet werden soll. Das Buch handelt zum großen Teil von dieser Ausbildung, dazu noch - ohne zu viel zu verraten - von der Welt nach dem Krieg. So weit, so profan. Das alleine aber würde wohl kaum einen fesselnden Roman über fast 400 Seiten ergeben, doch Card versteht es, ein intensives psychologisches Profil der Hauptfigur und der weiteren Handelnden zu konstruieren und dies in ein spannendes Setting einzuarbeiten.

Enders Welt

In der Literatur anderer Genres (von historischen Romanen vielleicht einmal abgesehen) steht die Welt und wie sie aussieht und funktioniert in der Regel im Hintergrund. Sie dient normalerweise lediglich dazu, der Handlung einen angemessenen Rahmen zu geben und bestenfalls noch, eine passende Atmosphäre zu konstruieren. In der Science Fiction ist das naturgemäß anders. Dabei reflektieren die Beschreibungen der zukünftigen Welt immer auch die Vorstellungen zum Zeitpunkt ihres Entstehens und können wenige Jahre später schon überholt sein oder skurril anmuten. Bei "Ender's Game" wird der Zeitpunkt nicht näher benannt. Die Welt ist durch den Krieg mit den Außerirdischen zu einer gewissen Einheit gezwungen worden, zerfällt hinter dieser Fassade aber weiterhin in konkurrierende Blöcke. Gesellschaftlich sind strikte Geburtenkontrolle und teilweise Überwachung fakt, genauso wie aber unbeschränkte Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit (zumindest im amerikanisch dominierten Bereich). Insgesamt erscheint das auch fast fünfundzwanzig Jahre nach dem Erscheinen des Buches nicht so abwegig, was auch daran liegen mag, dass Card die Neuauflage 1991 mit geringfügigen Änderungen der veränderten geopolitischen Lage, dem Ende des Eisernen Vorhangs, angepasst hat. Technologisch befindet man sich (natürlich) im Weltraum, kann mit Überlichtgeschwindigkeit kommunizieren, die Schwerelosigkeit teilweise kontrollieren und besitzt beeindruckende Waffensysteme. Interessant ist auch, dass Card eine gar nicht so unrealistische Version des Internets konstruiert hat. Grundsätzlich wirkt diese Welt heute keineswegs angestaubt.

Unter der Oberfläche

Nicht nur das Setting, auch die Handlung selbst unterliegt den Moden der Zeit. Hat man bei Westernfilmen z.B. lange Zeit den Indianer als den bösen Feind stilisiert, hat sich diese Einstellung inzwischen zum fast genauso unrealistischen "edlen Wilden" geändert. Die Science Fiction entstand zunächst aus den wissenschaftlich-romantischen Werken von Jules Verne, entwickelte sich dann mit H.G. Wells in eine technisch-gesellschaftskritische Richtung und verzweigte sich schließlich Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts, als es nach der Mondlandung erstmals realistisch erschien, dass die Fantasien wahr werden könnten, in viele Subgenres, von denen die meisten eine Zeit lang in Mode waren. Der Erfolg von "Ender's Game" Mitte der Achtziger ist sicherlich auch darauf zurückzuführen, dass die Angst vor dem großen Feind vor dem Hintergrund der stattfindenden Aufrüstungen (Pershing/SS-20, SDI) latent war und der Roman dieser Stimmung gut entsprechen konnte. Nichtsdestotrotz wirkt er heute noch frisch und unverbraucht. Das liegt vor allem an der Erzählweise und der Vielschichtigkeit der Handlung, die auf den ersten Blick nicht sichtbar wird. Denn dieses Buch handelt nicht (nur) von der Suche und Ausbildung des kommenden, großen Kommandanten, sondern ist in erster Linie eine psychologische Studie über den Protagonisten und ein Nachdenken darüber, wie Gut und Böse definiert werden. Dieses zeitlose und weit über die Science Fiction hinausgehende Thema spannend und unaufdringlich zu realisieren und dabei noch eine Welt zu erschaffen, die auch nach fünfundzwanzig Jahre weitestgehend denkbar erscheint, ist der Verdienst von Orson Scott Card. "Ender's Game" ist auch im Jahre 2009 noch ausgesprochen lesenswert.

Einen Kritikpunkt gibt es dann aber doch und der betrifft den letzten Teil, die Welt nach dem Krieg. Dieser Abschnitt wirkt mitunter etwas wahllos und fremdartig und wäre vielleicht besser das erste Kapitel des Nachfolgebuchs geworden.

Nachtrag

Diese Rezension bezieht sich auf die Neuausgabe von 2005 mit einem Vorwort von Andreas Brandhorst und einer Vorbemerkung des Autors selbst zur Neuausgabe nach der Überarbeitung 1991. Dabei schreibt er: "(…) Ich würde ihnen sogar empfehlen, diese Vorbemerkung zu überspringen." Genau das möchte ich auch anregen, ebenso für das Vorwort von Andreas Brandhorst. Interessant sind diese beiden Abschnitte eigentlich erst nach dem Lesen des Romans: Nachwort und Nachbemerkung wären also passendere Stellen gewesen.… (mehr)
