VB Reads...Speculative Fiction Come discuss thought-provoking speculative fiction in a group that welcomes diversity. Science fiction and fantasy can be a great escape, but it can also be a great way to examine social issues and alternative viewpoints or identities. Historically, science fiction has often been used as a way of commenting on the biases of the age in which it is written, using metaphors such as the creation of robots, alternative relationships between alien species, and the colonization of other worlds to show contemporary problems or questions in a new light. The aim of this group is to enjoy reading provocative science fiction (and occasional fantasy) stories and discussing the themes they might present, in both the original context and for us as individuals today. This group meets the third Monday of every month at 7pm in the writing corner on the mezzanine level of Village Books. Authors DO NOT attend.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursual K. LeGuin
When the human ambassador Genly Ai is sent to Gethen, the planet known as Winter by those outsiders who have experienced its arctic climate, he thinks that his mission will be a standard one of making peace between warring factions. Instead the ambassador finds himself wildly unprepared. For Gethen is inhabited by a society with a rich, ancient culture full of strange beauty and deadly intrigue—a society of people who are both male and female in one, and neither.

Oakland - The Diesel Readers discuss "Searoad" Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland welcomes The Diesel Readers back to the store to discuss Searoad by Ursula K. Le Guin on Monday, November 11th at 7 pm. Much like Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, Searoad is a collection of interwoven stories about the inhabitants of a small town -- this time, the small beach town of Klatsand, Oregon. Le Guin explores the dreams and sorrows of the men and women who live here, from the vacationing librarian who falls in love with a bookshop owner but feels more kinship to the other woman he's sleeping with, to the mourning woman who finds unexpected solace in her lover's daughter. Set against the rugged backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, Le Guin's stories capture the powerful, underlying bonds between people.
This event is free and all are welcome and encouraged to attend!
