Wilkie Collins was born in London, England on January 8, 1824. He worked first in business and then law, but eventually turned to literature. During his lifetime, he wrote 30 novels, more than 60 short stories, at least 14 plays, and more than 100 non-fiction pieces. His works include Antonia, The mehr anzeigen Woman in White, The Moonstone, The Haunted Hotel, and Heart and Science. He was a close friend of Charles Dickens and collaborated with him. - Collins wurde 1824 in London geboren und wuchs in einer Umgebung auf, die von Kunst und Künstlern geprägt war. Heute kennt man ihn in erster Linie aufgrund seiner beiden berühmtesten Romane, Die Frau in Weiß (ein Ausgangspunkt des viktorianischen Sensationsromans), oder Der Monddiamant, der oft für einen der ersten Detektivromane gehalten wird. Doch zu seiner eigenen Zeit war Collins unglaublich populär und rivalisierte mit seinem Freund Charles Dickens. Collins heiratete nie, aber seit 1858 lebte er abwechselnd mit zwei Frauen, Caroline Graves und Martha Rudd, mit der er drei Kinder hatte.

Trotz der Kürzung hatte ich beim Lesen nicht den Eindruck, dass mir Elemente der Geschichte fehlen würden. Im Vergleich zum Inhaltsverzeichnis einer vollständigen Ausgabe fällt aber auf, dass dort sehr viel mehr Personen in die Aufklärung um die Geschehnisse rund um Sir Percival Glyde involviert sind als in der gekürzten Version. Dennoch behält die gekürzte Version die Textstruktur bei, in der die Geschehnisse, teilweise überlappend, aus verschiedenen Perspektiven erzählt werden.
Aus der Einführung zum Text: "From the moment that Walter Hartright, a young art teacher, meets the mysterious Woman in White on a lonely road, his future and that of Laura, the woman he falls in love with, are linked to the strange woman for ever. Can Walter discover the terrible secret which the Woman in White knows about Laura's cruel husband, Sir Percival Glyde? Can he put right the wrongs done to Laura and her sister Marian by Sir Percival and his attractive but dangerous friend, Count Fosco? And is he too late to help the Woman in White herself?"
Alles in allem aus meiner Sicht eine klassische victorianische Geschichte ("mystery novel"), die fest in der damaligen Zeit (1850) verankert ist. Die Geschichte ist spannend entwickelt, bietet Überraschungen und interessante Charaktäre, da ist es kein Wunder, dass sie damals (zuerst als Fortsetzungsgeschichte in einer Zeitung ab 1859 veröffentlicht) so ein großer Erfolg war. Für heutige Leser erwartet der originale Text aber reichlich Durchhaltevermögen - mir reicht dann doch die gerkürzte Version.… (mehr)
