This is the book that seems to set the standard for the true crime genre, so perhaps my expectation was too high. The book’s construction is like many novels, with frequent shifts of scene to follow different characters and their narrative journey. Capote tells the story of the murder of four members of a Kansas family by alternately following the family’s last day, the journey of the murderers toward their crime, their travels following the murders, the investigation, the trial, and the time on death row awaiting the execution date. Capote seems particularly sympathetic toward one of the murderers, Perry Smith, to the point that it ought to raise questions about his objectivity. There are no footnotes or endnotes for readers to verify the facts of the case. A Sra. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first True Crime novel to hit the US market. In general, I don't read True Crime because I don't need to be any more scared of strangers than I already am, but I thought this book was excellent. One thing I learned from watching several of the movie versions out there (the 1967 version is particularly good, I think) is that Capote himself was actually heavily involved in the trials of Smith and Hickock. You would never guess that from reading the book, which is kind of creepy. I mean, in the interest of representing the truth, Capote should be a character in the novel, but he makes himself inivisible.
If nothing else, In Cold Blood justifies another Capote conviction: that when reportage commands the highest literary skills, it can approach the level of art. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
