Reading plans in 2018

I have a large collection of mostly awarded childrens & YA books. At the moment I am reading the books I haven't read since joining LT, mostly alphabeticly, to decide which to keep. The ones not to keep are donated to a library in Rotterdam (where we lived until 2005).
I started in 2018 with 697 childrens/YA books, of those 350 are TBR.

End of November update:
- Childrens/YA books TBR: 350 - 214 read in 2018 = 136 + 11 unread books acquired = 147 TBR
- Childrens/YA books on the shelves: 697 + 13 books acquired = 710 - 102 culled = 608 - 13 ready to go = 595

--

I keep trying to read more of my own books, of the 452 books I have read in 2017 238 (53%) were my own.
This year I try again to read at least 50% books of my own.

I join the TIOLI (Take It Or Leave It) challenges each month.

Sandrine is a nobleman's daughter. When the French Revolution starts, that isn't good. When the family is arrested, Sandrine escapes with help of her maid. Her father, mother and sister end up at the guillotine.

The historical setting is good, but the main character feels closer to the 20th century than to the 18th century.

Candido is born on the day the allied army landed in Sicily. His mother runs away with an American officer and leaves him behind with his father. I am glad we went by train to Maastricht, it was comfortable and I had a lot of reading time.

>73 figsfromthistle: Thank you, Anita. Why? Well in short my sister is convinced that:
1) my mother doesn't suffer from dementia (and if she does, it is all to blame to the medicines she gets)
2) she would be a better caretaker for my mother (but my father, my brother and I would no longer be able to visit my mother if my sister cared for my mother)
3) that ALL allopatic medicines are poisonous, so my mother should not take them (she even threathened my father physically over this in an argument a few years back, when my mother was still living with my father)
4) my mother agrees with her (as she does when my sister is with her, but my mother also agrees with my father when he is there)
So from her point of view she is absolutly right, and it is impossible to talk about it with her, as she is right and everyone else is wrong :-(

I'll never forget the last time I saw her, when our families got together for a barbecue at their house during my last year or two of high school. book 496: Liefde in tijden van gebrek by Astrid Roemer
from the library, non-fiction, Dutch, no translations, 340 pages
TIOLI Challenge #3: Read a memoir by a living woman

Astrid Roemer is a Dutch author of Surinam descent, who was awarded the P.C. Hooft award in 2016.

As a black, bi-sexual woman her life hasn't been easy. Yet the paranoia all through these memoires, covering the first 15 years of the present century, is chilling. She is stalked, robbed, a victim of identity fraud, all so bad that I can't help to wonder at first if she herself has mental problems. She keeps running from her stalkers, moving from one place to an other in the Netherlands, Suriname and Scotland, together with her two cats.
At the end of the book I am convinced most of her experiences are real, she must have stirred some revenge seeking people earlier in her life.

Not an easy read, it made me feel paranoid myself... glad the book is done.

>238 paulstalder: Thank you, Paul, now on to five :-)

I will be alone most of Christmas, but I don't mind. Frank works the nights of Chrismas Eve and Christmas Day. He goes to work around 21:00 and returns around 9:30 in the morning. He can sleep some hours at work, and back home he goes to bed to get some more sleep. I wake him at 14:30 with a cup of coffee :-)

>239 FAMeulstee: Well, some people have to work during the festivities - my son has to work in the old people's hospital, too. So, the two daughters will come wednesday and he will join us for Christmas feast after 6 in the evening.

That gives you time to read - nobody disturbs your reading during the night, and your reading doesn't disturb Frank in his sleep :)
