Great new thread, Mark! I'll keep The Hummingbird in mind, Mark. And I'll let you know what I think of A Book of Memory when I finish it - so far I think it has the name Mark Beer Fridge on it ! It's very promising.

Edited to add that my library has The Hummingbird on order, so I put a hold on it , when it comes in.

^On audio, I am starting American Housewife: Stories. I have heard good things about this collection and I know Joanne was a fan. I do not listen to short stories on audio very much but we will see how it goes.

Of course, I also have Denali's Howl going, along with the Adrienne Rich volume. I never lack for reading material...

The thread topper looks like some of the book covers I have been seeing in the last few years. Stark, minimalist, with lots of color. It reminded me of the cover of the Charles Todd mystery Red Door. It is one of the Inspector Rutledge mysteries. The topper also reminded me of some of the covers on the hardbound versions of Rennie Airth books. Not to mention the cover on some of the Ivan Doig books. I liked the thread topper. I would love to have that picture somewhere where I could see it all the time.

>33 msf59: I'm off work until April 12 because my brother is coming for a visit. Most of my time so far has been spent cleaning and doing all the stuff that has been neglected around here while I spend my time taking courses, going on research trips and *sigh* working. There is a lot of stuff to do because I have been in school part time since 2009 and lately I have been working my Fridays off (we get every second Friday off). I am not sure how much reading I will get in except for the reading/studying for my exam on April 12.

I plan to take a day off from housework on Wednesday to head to the library and hunt down a book for the April AAC.

Congrats on the surprise gift of I Am Spain. The Art Forger looks intriguing - a thriller involving fine art. Hmm.

Hi there Lone Ranger! I guess I'm going to eventually succumb to the A Manual for Cleaning Women. You have the nearly the entirety of the 75's warbling about it. My library is not getting it , except in E book format, which does suit me. I'd have to read from my Ipad mini, which is not my style. Sadly amazon has not enabled Canadian Libraries to use kindles. Sad but true. Kobo's yes, I pad , virtually every brand of e- reader but the Kindle. Licensing issue.

>63 LovingLit: Hooray for a good presentation, Megan. High Five! I do my share of housekeeping around here but I honestly can't say I am a big fan.

In regards to, Spain in Our Hearts, if the narrative is as strong, as it was in King Leopold's Ghost, this should be a helluva read.

>64 vancouverdeb: Hi, Deb! Good to see you. I am so happy to hear the positive response to Cleaning Women. My warbling has paid off.

^After finishing The Art Forger, I decided to listen to Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is her exploration of creativity and inspiration. I am finding it very interesting and Gilbert does a nice job narrating. I like Gilbert and I have to admit, that I liked Pray, Eat, Love, despite it's indulgences. (Hey, no throwing anything on my thread!!) It was a good audio experience. Sadly, I have not read The Signature of All Things ,which did receive strong reviews. I hope to finally get to it, this year.

This is a shorty, so I will finish it quickly.

40) The Hummingbird by Stephen P. Kiernan 4.5 stars

Deborah Birch, is a hospice nurse, in Portland, Oregon. She is very good at her job, but her home life is a mess. Her mechanic husband, has returned from Iraq, after serving three deployments. He is not the same man she married and he is tormented by many horrors. This may be the biggest challenge of her life.
Adding to her woes, is her current patient, Barclay Reed, a retired history professor, who is a crabby, self-absorbed jerk, who is dying from kidney cancer. Their relationship deepens, as Deborah reads to him, an unfinished manuscript, that he wrote, about WWII. This sets them on a journey, of discovery, forgiveness and healing. It also sets Deborah on a path, of how to help her husband through his nightmares and demons.
This novel was such a nice surprise. The writing was solid and it avoided any heavy-handedness or sappiness, that could have plagued such a story. The author handled it, with a sure and steady hand.

**Kiernan wil be one of the authors in attendance at Booktopia. He also lives in Vermont.

Happy Friday, Mark!

I wouldn't have pegged you as an Elizabeth Gilbert fan, but I haven't read her, and I'm not throwing anything. I have liked middle grade books by her sister, Catherine Gilbert Murdock, the D.J. ones starting with Dairy Queen.

You read Red Rising, didn't you? I just started the third in the trilogy, Morning Star, and it's really good so far.

Hit was a good GN. Now I'm reading the second Kate Beaton collection, Step Aside, Pops.

Hope it's a decent one for you today. A "too bad" Hawks loss last night - Darling (the goalie) deserved better after the way he played.

Hi Mark. I've spent much of the work day cleaning in anticipation of our move. In 30 years here, I've never fully cleaned out. Now, I'm about 3/4 done with it all, with about 3.5 to 4 weeks til first move day.

I found at least one book that was on my Christmas wishlist so that was a good thing. Sue Grafton's D Is for Deadbeat.

Sounds like the Cubbie curse has struck again. Kyle Schwarber is out for the season.

That is a major bummer about Schwarber. I really feel sorry for the young player.

sycamores blazing through the sulfuric air,
dappled with scars, still exuberantly budding,
our animal passion rooted in the city."

- Twenty-One Love Poems

"The leafbud struggles forth
toward the light of the airshaft this is faith
this pale extension of a day
when looking up you know something is changing
winter has turned though the wind is colder
Three streets away a roof collapses onto people
who thought they still had time Time out of mind

I have written so many words
wanting to live inside you
to be of use to you

Now I must write for myself for this blind
woman scratching the pavement with her wand of thought
this slippered crone inching on icy streets
reaching into wire trashbaskets pulling out
what was thrown away and infinitely precious

I look at my hands and see they are still unfinished
I look at the vine and see the leafbud
inching towards life

I look at my face in the glass and see
a halfborn woman".

"My heart is moved by all I cannot save; so much has been destroyed

I have to cast my lot with those
who age after age, perversely

with no extraordinary power,
reconstitute the world."

Happy weekend, Mark!

I'm also reading Silas Marner - chosen mostly, I hate to admit because it is so short. I'm reading it on Project Gutenberg.

Do you have any recall of the Classics comic books? I remember a few from the 60's. I never bought them because they cost a quarter instead of the 12 cents for a regular (much shorter) comic. My older brother would spring for them, and I distinctly remember reading his copy of Silas Marner when I was about in third grade. I can still see the panel with Silas with his gold piled around him and another with the little girl with golden hair. So it doesn't feel like a totally new read, although those two panels pretty much sum up what I remember.

>131 msf59: Happy Saturday Sunday, Mark! I'm eager to read Evicted as well, and warbling from you and Joe has helped pique my interest that much more. It's now not uncommon for my partners and I to care for children whose families are homeless, living in substandard housing, facing eviction due to rising rents, or living without heat or electricity due to their inability to pay their bills. One of the intensive care physicians at Children's recognized these families' need for legal services, as these problems frequently had negative ramifications for the children, especially medically fragile ones, and he, some of the lawyers who work for Children's and several law professors at Georgia State University in Atlanta created the Health Law Partnership (HeLP) to assist these families.

43) Denali's Howl by Andy Hall 4.2 stars

In the summer of 1967, twelve young men struck out on an expedition, to reach the top of Denali, the highest mountain in America. Five returned...

The men, after reaching the summit were caught in an “arctic super blizzard,” with winds reaching a mind-blowing 300 miles per hour.
The author, is the son, of the park's superintendent, at the time and has done a fine job, researching and exploring this little known tragedy, which remains the worst climbing disaster, on American soil. There was plenty of blame to go around too. A few of the climbers, did not have the experience to tackle this indomitable mountain and others made poor choices, with their equipment. Rescue efforts were thwarted time after time, since the storm raged on for nearly a week.
Fans of Into Thin Air and other rugged, white-knuckle, adventure stories should really like this one, but it is not for the faint of heart.

44) The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro 4 stars

“In the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, a pair of thieves disguised as Boston police officers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and roamed the Museum’s galleries, stealing thirteen works of art.”

“It remains the largest unsolved art heist in history.”

-The Gardner Museum Heist

Claire Roth is a talented young artist, but after being involved in a scandal, involving a past boyfriend, she has been black-balled by the art community. She now paints reproductions. When an old friend and gallery owner, approaches her, to forge a painting, he offers her a chance to have her own, one-woman show, which will gain her the respect she yearns for. The glitch is: the Degas painting that she is asked to copy, appears to be one of the stolen artworks, from the Gardner theft.
This sends Claire down a very dangerous path, which involves local police, the FBI and possible prison time.
There is mystery, intrigue, romance and gorgeous descriptions of art and the process of creating art. The author seems to know her stuff. The novel begins to stretch credibility in the last third or so, but not quite enough to sink the story. A good, old-fashioned yarn.

**Shapiro will be one of the Booktopia Vermont authors.

“Perfect love has a breath of poetry which can exalt the relations of the least-instructed human beings.”

“Before such calm external beauty the presence of a vague fear is more distinctly felt - like a raven flapping its slow wing across the sunny air.”

"In old days there were angels who came and took men by the hand and led them away from the city of destruction. We see no white-winged angels now. But yet men are led away from threatening destruction: a hand is put in theirs, which leads them forth gently towards a calm and bright land, so that they look no more backward; and the hand may be a little child's."

-Silas Marner

I just finished it and was quite pleased with the result. It is not a smooth read (not as polished as Middlemarch) and it is sometimes long-winded, especially in the dialogue, but it is a good story, populated with memorable characters and, of course, there is the fine prose.

Since the third in the trilogy is already out we may have to do that!

My book discussion group talked about Burial Rites and everybody called it grim. However, everybody was also impressed with the writing and can't wait to see what this author will write next. At some point I will finish the book, but just can't go where that book will take me right now. I started listening to Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and like the narrator. This will be a nice easy book to listen to in the car. I started to listen to Radiance by Catherynne Valente but it wasn't making much sense. I took a look at the hardcopy of the novel in my library and figured out why. This is not a novel to listen to. It is told from multiple viewpoints at multiple points in time and it skips between the two. In the book the author uses different fonts to indicate who is talking, but with only one reader the recorded version isn't as successful. As soon as I finish reading As the Crow Flies, my next Longmire, I will start the book, and then move on to an Atwood. By that time the month will be up and I can start Radiance for May.

Evening

"You call—and in a little pomegranate tree
an owlet barks like a puppy.
In the evening height the moon’s curved blade
is so lonely and ringing.

You call—and a spring splashes with the turquoise of evening:
the water is fresh, like your voice,
and the moon, quivering, pierces a clay jug,
gleaming with its glaze."

>239 jnwelch: Morning, Joe! Do you still have that link for the Desmond interview, otherwise I can try to locate it ,up there somewhere?
Life on Mars is waiting for me at the library, thanks to you.

Here you go, buddy, Matthew Desmond at the Politics & Prose bookstore, talking about Evicted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24M9wUaCEKo

It's not short, so you want to watch in pieces, but I was caught up in the whole thing. What a modest and remarkable guy he is.

We've got some pretty good weather going on here, Mark. Supposedly in the next few days we are supposed have around 70 F temps. Now I'll really have to dig out my capri's and shorts. Love the purple bird.

Hi, Deb! Good to see you. It is beginning to warm up nice here too. Hope to shed my jacket, for the next few days and start working on my tan.
Hope you can crack out those shorts and capris.

I am enjoying Shelter, waiting for it to take another dark turn.

Plus a day off tomorrow, for a 3-day weekend. Yahooooooo!!

^This is my current GN, Deep Dark Fears. Here is a description: "A devilishly funny collection of 101 comics that explores our most gruesome, hilarious, and bizarre fears-and the dangers lurking around every corner."

Almost halfway done. These are a lot of fun. Not every one hits the target but many do.

We've been having some great, warm weather this week, too. There's a possibility of a foot of snow this weekend, though. April in Colorado... *sigh*

You might like my current read Shelter: A Novel. A dark, family drama.

The library ordered Patience by Daniel Clowes for me, so I'm looking forward to that as my next GN.

^Hooray for Poetry Month! I bought my first volume of poetry, A Thousand Mornings, (someone buy him a beer!) and I picked up 2 volumes from the library, one called Trapeze: Poems from Deborah Digges. I do not remember who recommended this one. Has anyone read her? And Life on Mars, which Joe raved about. It looks like I am set for the rest of the month.

^Of course, that number is very important around here, but it also happens to be our temperature in Chicagoland today. B.A.G. I am not switching to shorts yet. I will wait another couple of weeks, but I will be in shirt-sleeves, working on that farmer's tan.

On the reading front, I am enjoying Shelter: A Novel. It is another very dark, family drama. She pulls no punches here. I will wrap up, The Heart Goes Last today. This one was not Primo Atwood. It's not bad, great premise but feels somewhat half-baked. Oh, well...

I am also still reading Deep Dark Fears and my Oliver collection. Keeping me busy on the book front.

I'll be off from work until next Saturday (although the Emergency Department at my hospital just called me on my work phone to ask me to admit a patient to my service, even though I'm at home), so I should be able to finish several books by then.
