This is the collective Group Challenge for The Annual Challenge we are setting up for 2019 where, between us, we are looking to read a book published every year since 1920.

To get a book added to the challenge post it below when you have read it, giving the book title, author and the year it was published. I will then allocate it to the right year. Feel free to keep adding books even if the year has already been covered, as it will be interesting to see which is the most popular year for books during the past hundred years.

Any book counts if it was published between 1920 and 2019.

The Challenge starts on 1st January 2019 and ends on 31st December 2019. Can we collectively cover every year?

I like the idea of this challenge but am unclear how it works. Do I just set up a post in this thread that I update or create a thread of my own? Is there a wiki or thread to see books read by others for each decade?

I apologize if all this has been covered in previous posts!

84Sergeirocks
Jan. 26, 2019, 9:49 pm

Hey, Leslie, Welcome! :)

Most of us set up our own threads for our yearly 'reading logs', where each of us can keep a running total of every book we read throughout the year; for instance mine for this year is at http://www.librarything.com/topic/301881 (This year, some have named their threads specifically for the Century Challenge.)

For the purposes of the 'Century of Books' challenge we just pop in here and leave a post giving year, title and author of book (some of us add our star rating, too) so that Andrew-theQM can then correlate them.

Unfortunately there isn't a wiki whatsit, just the list of posts above, or people's individual logs, which you're welcome to browse.

>83 leslie.98: >84 Sergeirocks: But note that you do not need to keep your own list if you don't want to. You can simply add your reads to the group list, if you'd prefer (it's what I'm doing). That is, just add it to this thread, and Andrew will edit his posts at the top.

Hmmm, I'm thinking if we do something similar again in the future, a wiki would be a good idea. Then, it doesn't have to be up to one person to continually edit the posts in the thread. Everyone could add their own to the wiki.

I've debated joining it but now that I see Agatha Christie added, and the publication date of The Book of Lost Tales being 1980's, I'm beginning to think I can participate. The 1940's and 50's might be a bit more difficult, but I like your choice, >52 Andrew-theQM:, of Endurance and the voyages of Shackleton and Franklin on the two different poles intrigue me.

Books from the 1990s:

1991: The Chalk Circle Man (1/18)

>99 Andrew-theQM: Andrew, have you ever had those anxiety dreams where you are trying to go somewhere, and there are numerous delays and diversions, and you never get there? Well this book was like that. we have 3 historians from 2060 coming back to 1940. One is observing evacuee children at a country mansion. One wants to observe the populace sleeping in the underground away from the bombs. The third is posing as a war correspondent to watch the evacuation of Dunkirk. All goes well at first but then the ''drops'' (the time machine portals hidden away from prying eyes) break down or are unavailable,or all sorts of obstacles prevent them reaching them,so panic sets in as their attempts to reach the ''drops'' fail.
Far too long,it should have been edited down to about 300 pages, then the other half of the book, published separately as All Clear could have been added.
I didn't find the historical research egregiously wrong, only a few minor blips really, that only Brits would notice, but the characters were cardboard, the dialogue bland, and the whole thing very very repetitious as Willis as usual gave us excessive detail. All a bit bland, and Willis always dots the ''i''s and crosses the ''t''s -twice,if not 3 times, but Willis writes smoothly, and I got through it surprisingly quickly.490 pages down,640 still to go,but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. But there had better be some surprises and excitement coming up,I am very tired of hearing bombs go off and trottingup and down the streets of London during air raids!

Ahhh, I'd venture to say that disco belonged in the 70s. Late 70s, I suppose and it spilled over a bit into the 80s, but more 70s in my opinion.

298LibraryCin
Sept. 11, 2019, 7:18 pm

According to the disco entry in wikipedia:

"Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States' urban nightlife scene ...
By the late 1970s, most major U.S. cities had thriving disco club scenes ...
Disco was the last popular music movement driven by the baby boom generation. It began to decline in the United States during 1979-80, and by 1982 it had lost nearly all popularity there. Disco Demolition Night, an anti-disco protest held in Chicago on July 12, 1979, remains the most well-known of several "backlash" incidents across the country that symbolized disco's declining fortune."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco

So, it was already declining by the start of the 80s.

I've just finished an excellent collection of short stories: Good Evening, Mrs. Craven: the Wartime Stories of Mollie Panter-Downes. These 21 stories were originally published in the New Yorker magazine between 1939 and 1944; this collection was published in book form in 1999.

So I'm not sure which year(s) to classify this collection.

Checking in:

1946 Palladian, Elizabeth Taylor
1953 The Night of the Hunter, Davis Grubbs
1967 The Caxley Chronicles book 2: "The Howards of Caxley"; Miss Read
2007 Letters from Lamledra: Cornwall 1914-1918, Marjorie Williams ♥ loved this little book of letters by a Cornwall artist
2009 Strangers, Anita Brookner
2014 Think Like a Freak, Levitt & Dubner
2018 The Cut Out Girl, Bart Van Es

I'm sure I won't make one hundred; my goal now is to get to 50/100 and possibly continue the challenge next year (101 years!) to see if I can make a complete sweep.

I have more books read in the current decade than any other decade, and more books in 2018 than any other year, and yet somehow I feel like I'm mostly reading "old" books. Reality check.

2019 She Said, Jodi Kantor & Megan Twohey

Thanks for my flowers Carol. You are indeed a major source of ''encourage mints''on LT for so many of us.you are the backbone of all the groups you are on.
I am absolutely useless with the technical stuff, cant make pictures etc appear whatever I do.But I hope someone else can send a bouquet or cake or both for Carol. She deserves it!
I was ill all last week and didnt do a thing for Xmas, everything, decorating, painting, wrapping parcels, shopping,is being crammed into 3 days. I am aching from head to foot,my back and knees are killing me,Been to town twice today.and tomorrow will be a nightmare.I reckon it will be a 14 hour day. :0(
So I dont think I will be back on here before 28th,coping with Xmas Day,Boxing Day,granddaughter's birthday on 27th.So I wish everyone a Merry Xmas, with lots of books for presents :0)
The last days of the month will be so much fun, selecting next years reads. From 28th to 1st Jan I almost barricade the door,no visitors,no houseworkjust watching mindless TV,eating all the leftovers from Xmas, sipping the whiskey and of course, choosing next year's reads. Fantastic!

My December books toward this challenge:

1960 A Man For All Seasons, Robert Bolt
1981 Death in a Tenured Position, Amanda Cross
1926 The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Agatha Christie
1946 The Four Graces, D. E. Stevenson
1927 The Big Four, Agatha Christie
1971 Elizabeth Bowen, Allan E. Austin
1922 The Enchanted April, Elizabeth von Arnim
1976 No Holly for Miss Quinn, Miss Read
1990 The Road To San Giovanni, Italo Calvino
2002 Enemy Women, Paulette Jiles
1943 Celia's House, D. E. Stevenson

Since I only read 54 books in the century, I'm making this a 2 year/101 books (1920-2020) challenge, and will continue to keep track on my own thread to get to 100.

I managed to finish five, count 'em, five books this month! Sadly, one of them was not my final book to fill in the decade (1960's), but I am pretty glad that I exceeded my goal of 45 books by 3! Yes, I read 48 books (which for me is pretty amazing), and I sooo love being able to spend these non-work days reading! Like >365 dustydigger: I like to spend this time on LT organizing my challenges, updating my lists, and all that stuff.

So, here's my list of Challenge books:

1999 Why Gods Persist Robert Hinde
2001 Guardian of the Vision Irene Radford
2017 Norse Mythology Neil Gaiman
2019 The Testaments Margaret Atwood

And to complete my Century challenge (mine being more modest: to read a book published in a decade within the century) I had the incomparable Hercule Poirot from the 1920's!

1928 The Mystery of the Blue Train Agatha Christie
